An Evening with Mr. Poe: Halloween Party: Throw a Halloween party for adults with an Edgar Allan Poe theme for an easy and enjoyable get-together.

An Evening with Mr. Poe is the perfect way to celebrate Halloween! This sophisticated and spooky party theme comes together easily with some simple gothic table decorations and easy-to-make finger foods and cocktails.

Halloween Party Decor Highlights

Our DIY decor elements include a "Nevermore" grapevine wreath (complete with raven), gothic candlesticks, a book of Poe's famous works (or a stack of vintage leather-bound books), dry ice for some spooky fog, a faux quill pen and ink, a birdcage tea light holder, ravens and a mini bird's nest.

Ravens & Mini Bird's Nest
  • Spray a mini grapevine bird's nest with black glossy spray paint.
  • Add tiny ravens and glittery silver "eggs."
  • Display with larger raven.
Faux Quill Pen & Ink
  • Mix together red, blue, green and yellow food coloring in water to create fake ink.
  • Pour into a glass container and insert a black feather.

Nevermore Grapevine Wreath
  • Spray a grapevine wreath with black glossy spray paint.
  • Attach glittery black bow.
  • Hot glue glitter chipboard letters to floral wire.
  • String wire across the wreath.
  • Attach raven.
Gothic Candlesticks
  • Paint wooden candlesticks with black glitter acrylic paint.
  • Add ivory taper candles.
  • Tie ribbon around base of candle.
  • Add black tulle pom pom to the ribbon.
  • Use a lighter to burn holes in the tulle for a grungy look.
Dry Ice
  • Set the mood with dry ice.
  • Follow all handling instructions for dry ice very carefully.
  • Add chunks of dry ice to a bowl of hot water to create smoke/fog effect.

Halloween Party Recipes

The Pit & The Pendulum Party Mix

  • Ingredients:
  • 6 cups wheat, corn or rice Chex cereal
  • 2 cups mini pretzels
  • 1-1/2 cup Goldfish crackers
  • 1/2 cup lightly salted peanuts
  • 1/2 cup lightly salted cashews
  • 1/4 lb (1 stick) butter
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon Tabasco Sauce (more or less to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Preheat the oven to 325°F and line 2 shallow baking pans with parchment.

Place the cereal, pretzels, crackers, peanuts and cashews in a large bowl and toss with your hands to combine.

Melt the butter in a very large skillet over medium heat. Whisk in the Worcestershire, Tabasco, honey, paprika and garlic powder until well blended. Add the cereal mix, and using a spatula, toss until well coated with the seasoned butter.

Divide the mix between the baking sheets, spreading to a single layer. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until the mix looks dry and lightly toasted. Allow to cool completely before serving or storing for up to 3 days in a airtight container.

Makes about 10 cups

Bleeding Brie

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
  • 1 8 oz round of brie
  • 1/4 cup raspberry preserves
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Preheat oven to 400°F. Unfold the puff pastry sheet and place brie in the center. Spoon raspberry preserves on top of brie, then flip it over so that the preserves are on the bottom. Fold the pastry up over the cheese to cover it, then trim any excess.

Beat egg with water and brush over the pastry, especially the seam. Place it seam side down on a baking sheet and brush the top of the pastry with the egg wash. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until crispy, golden brown. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving with fresh fruit, crackers or sliced baguette.

Makes 6 to 8 servings

Raven Wings

  • Ingredients:
  • 12 chicken wings
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire
  • 1 clove garlic, very finely chopped

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Combine the molasses, chipotle sauce, Worcestershire and garlic in a small bowl.

Place a wire rack inside a shallow, rimmed baking sheet and coat both with nonstick spray. Arrange the wings upside down on the rack in a single layer. Season lightly with salt and pepper, then brush with about 1/3 of the molasses sauce.

Turn the wings over, season again, and brush with molasses sauce, reserving about 1 tablespoon to add after a some time in the oven.

Roast the wings for 8 minutes, remove, brush with the remaining sauce and return to the oven for 10 to 12 minutes longer. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Makes 6 appetizer servings (2 wings each)

The Tell-Tale Cosmo

  • Ingredients:
  • 1-1/2 oz vodka
  • 3/4 oz Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur
  • 1 oz grape juice
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice

Shake with ice and strain into martini glass. Garnish with fresh raspberry.

Eulalie's Elixir

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 oz Midori
  • 1 oz silver rum
  • 1-1/2 oz pineapple juice
  • Lemon-lime soda
  • Grenadine

Shake Midori, rum and pineapple juice with ice and strain into 2 oz shot glass. Splash soda on top and drizzle with grenadine. Makes two shots.
