Cinnamon-Orange Baked Doughnuts

These baked doughnuts are a somewhat healthier alternative to the conventional fried variety, yet they still satisfy that occasional doughnut craving we all get from time to time. This version is flavored with cinnamon and orange and can be glazed or rolled in cinnamon-sugar. Delicious with a cup of coffee or tea, they make a nice treat for a weekend morning.

Baked cake doughnuts flavored with cinnamon and orange are quick to prepare and make a delicious indulgence for a Sunday morning breakfast.


  • 2 cups cake flour, sifted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

For the glaze:

  • 1-1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • Colored sugar for decorating, optional


  • Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  • Sift together the cake flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, orange zest and extract. Stir into the dry ingredients along with the eggs. Add the melted butter and mix until just combined. The batter will be thick and quite sticky.
  • Spray a regular size doughnut pan with nonstick spray. Fill each cup about 2/3 full with batter and bake for 7 to 9 minutes until the doughnuts are golden and spring back when touched.
  • Cool doughnuts in the pan for 3 to 4 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  • For the glaze, combine the confectioners’ sugar, milk and extract in a shallow bowl. Dip the top of each doughnut in the glaze and transfer to a plate. Sprinkle with colored sugar if desired.

Tips for Making This Recipe

Try to consume your doughnuts within 24 hours of making them as, like any doughnut, they get stale rather quickly.
