Make Your Own "Instant" Oatmeal
Save money by making your own flavored "instant" oatmeal instead of buying pre-packaged.
Want to prepare a hot breakfast but pressed for time in the morning? Instead of reaching for a box of instant oatmeal packets, buy a canister of quick cooking oats and use this simple recipe to save about 40 percent per serving, cut back on sugar, calories and additives.
It will only take you about 30 seconds longer to prepare. You'll also be helping the environment by eliminating all that excess packaging!
For Cinnamon-Vanilla Oatmeal ~
Place 1/2 cup quick cooking oats in a serving bowl. Add 2 teaspoons sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg and 6 ounces of milk.
Stir and microwave for 2 to 2-1/2 minutes on 80% power. Stir again and allow to stand for about a minute. Add a little extra milk if desired.
Note: Microwave cooking times vary by wattage. The time suggested here is a basic guideline using a 900 watt microwave. You may need to experiment to find what works best with your own microwave.
