July is National Hot Dog MonthThe 4th of July is an iconic American holiday that reminds us all of freedom and, quite frankly, grilling! So it only makes sense that July has been designated National Hot Dog Month.

According to Hatfield Quality Meats and a poll by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will consume about 150 million hot dogs on July 4th, and a total of about 7 billion before the summer's end. That's approximately 818 hot dogs per second.

  • In 2007, New Yorkers bought around $103 million worth of hot dogs.
  • "Hot Dog Season" lasts from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
  • All hot dogs are considered sausages, and sausage is one of the oldest types of processed food, dating back to the 9th century B.C.
  • Hot dogs first became popular at ballparks in 1893 - a tradition that may have started in St. Louis.
  • The average baseball hot dog vendor sells around 150 hot dogs each game.
  • 63 percent of baseball fans listed hot dogs as the single ballpark food item they couldn't live without, and 88 percent said they had already eaten or planned to eat a hot dog at a sporting event this year.
