June is National Iced Tea Month, and the benefits of drinking tea go far beyond just keeping your body hydrated.

Whether you choose to brew black, green, white or oolong, unsweetened iced tea is a delicious alternative to water year-round.

Health Benefits

According to the Tea Council of the USA, iced tea contains flavonoids that boost heart health by:

  • providing antioxidants that help fight inflammation
  • supporting healthy cholesterol and blood vessel function

In addition, research has shown that tea can help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer:

  • along with the use of sunscreen, tea can help combat skin cancer
  • the bioactive compounds in tea effect genes that impact cancer susceptibility

A University of Arizona study showed that participants who drank iced black tea and citrus peel had 42 percent reduced risk of skin cancer.

Interested in shedding some of those winter pounds in time for swimsuit season? Three to four cups daily of tea, especially green tea, can help you with that: catechins and caffeine in tea can boost metabolism, maintain insulin sensitivity and boost fat oxidation.

If You're Not Already Drinking Tea...You Should Be!

Tea is low in calories and full of health benefits - that's why it is the most widely consumed beverage in the world (second only to good old H2O). In fact, 80 percent of American households drink tea, meaning more than 127 million people in the U.S. enjoy a glass of tea on any given day.

So, abandon sugar-laden soda and replace it with unsweetened iced tea - your body will thank you for it!
