Bone-in hams have become a family tradition for holiday tables across the country, and the presentation and flavor is unparalleled. Whether you're looking for a convenient holiday meal or a beautiful table centerpiece, hams are perfect for those special occasions.
Before you can purchase a holiday ham, you'll need to know how many people you will be serving. According to HoneyBaked Ham Company, plan for 1/2 to 3/4 pounds per serving for bone-in ham.
Hams generally are affected by the amount of water they contain. Most hams will fall into one of these categories:
"Ham" -- When a ham is simply labeled "ham," it usually means it contains at least 20.5% protein and has no water added. Spiral-sliced HoneyBaked Hams fall into this category.
"Ham with Natural Juices" -- These hams contain at least 18.5% protein and have a small amount of water added.
"Ham - Water Added" -- These contain 17% protein and no more than 10% water added.
"Ham and Water Products" -- Commonly seen in the deli, this ham is less than 17% protein and contains any amount of water.
Different types of ham have different instruction for storage, but spiral-sliced hams will keep in the fridge for six to eight days and in the freezer for up to 45 days.
Ham is low in fat because it comes from the hind leg, a lean pork cut. It is an excellent source of protein, thiamin, iron, zinc, niacin and vitamins B-1, B-6 and B-12.
